IAS Exam Pattern

The IAS Exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is one of the most prestigious and challenging competitive exams in India. Officially known as the Civil Services Examination (CSE), it is a three-stage process designed to assess a candidate's intellectual capabilities, knowledge, aptitude, and decision-making skills. The exam pattern is structured to evaluate not only the academic knowledge of the aspirants but also their ability to think critically, analyze complex situations, and demonstrate leadership qualities. The three stages of the IAS exam include the Preliminary Exam, Main Exam, and the Personality Test (Interview). Each stage serves a distinct purpose and requires a different preparation strategy. Understanding the exam pattern is crucial for planning an effective study approach and increasing the chances of success in this highly competitive exam.

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Preliminary exam is the first stage of the IAS exam. It is a screening test to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination. The marks obtained in the Prelims are not counted towards the final ranking.

Pattern:

The Prelims consist of two objective-type papers (multiple choice questions).

Important Details:

• Paper I (General Studies): This paper tests the candidate's knowledge in subjects like current events, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and general science.
• Paper II (CSAT): This paper tests aptitude skills such as comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, and decision-making. It is qualifying in nature; candidates need to score a minimum of 33% marks.
• Total Marks: 400
• Negative Marking: There is a penalty of 1/3rd of the marks for each wrong answer in both papers.

Note: Only those candidates who qualify for the Prelims (based on Paper I marks) are eligible to sit for the Mains examination.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

The Mains exam is the second stage and is descriptive in nature. It is designed to assess a candidate’s academic knowledge and their ability to express that knowledge in writing. The marks obtained in the Mains, along with the interview, contribute to the final ranking.

Pattern:

• The Mains consists of 9 papers, of which 7 are considered for ranking.

Important Details:

• Qualifying Papers:
• Paper A: Indian Language (selected by the candidate from a list of languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution).
• Paper B: English.
• These papers are only qualifying, and candidates must secure 25% marks in each.
• Merit-Based Papers:
• Essay: Tests the ability to articulate ideas on a given topic.
• General Studies (Papers II-V): Four papers covering various aspects of Indian and global history, geography, governance, ethics, technology, environment, and social issues.
• Optional Subject (Papers VI-VII): Candidates must choose one subject from a list of optional subjects provided by UPSC. Each subject has two papers.
• Total Marks for Mains: 1750 (Only Papers I-VII are considered for ranking).

3. Personality Test (Interview)

The final stage of the IAS exam is the Personality Test, commonly known as the Interview. The interview is designed to assess a candidate’s overall personality, including mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, social traits, leadership qualities, and moral integrity.

Pattern:

• Marks Allotted: 275 marks
• Nature: The interview is conducted in a face-to-face manner by a panel of experts who assess the candidate’s suitability for a career in the civil services.

4. Final Ranking

• The final ranking is based on the total marks obtained in the Mains (1750 marks) and the Personality Test (275 marks), giving a total of 2025 marks.
• Candidates are ranked based on their performance in the Mains and Interview, and appointments to the IAS and other civil services are made based on these rankings.
