Selection process for NTPC

The RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) exam selection process involves multiple stages, depending on the specific post. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the selection process:

1. Computer-Based Test (CBT 1)

This is the first stage of the selection process and is common for all RRB NTPC posts.

  • Purpose: To screen candidates for the next stage.
  • Total Questions: 100 questions.
  • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for PwD candidates).
  • Sections:
    • Mathematics: 25 questions.
    • General Intelligence and Reasoning: 30 questions.
    • General Awareness: 50 questions.
  • Marking Scheme:
    • Each question carries 1 mark.
    • Negative marking: 1/3rd mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

The CBT 1 is qualifying in nature, meaning it is used to shortlist candidates for CBT 2. The marks obtained in CBT 1 are not considered in the final merit list.

2. Computer-Based Test (CBT 2)

The second stage is more advanced than CBT 1 and is specific to the post applied for.

  • Purpose: To further shortlist candidates for skill tests or document verification.
  • Total Questions: 120 questions.
  • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for PwD candidates).
  • Sections:
    • Mathematics: 35 questions.
    • General Intelligence and Reasoning: 35 questions.
    • General Awareness: 50 questions.
  • Marking Scheme:
    • Each question carries 1 mark.
    • Negative marking: 1/3rd mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

Post-wise cutoff will be applied, and candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in CBT 2.

3. Skill Tests (for specific posts)

Certain posts under RRB NTPC require additional skill tests beyond CBT 2:

a. Typing Skill Test (TST)

This test is required for clerical posts such as:

  • Junior Clerk cum Typist
  • Senior Clerk cum Typist
  • Junior Account Assistant cum Typist

Requirements:

  • Typing speed of 30 words per minute (WPM) in English or 25 WPM in Hindi.
  • The Typing Skill Test is qualifying in nature and does not carry marks toward the final merit list.

b. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

This test is required for Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts.

Test Focus:

  • Candidates are tested on multi-tasking, decision making, attention to detail, and reaction time.
  • There is no negative marking in CBAT.
  • Candidates must secure a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery to qualify (no relaxation is allowed in this score for any category).

Final merit for these posts is prepared based on marks obtained in CBT 2 (70%) and CBAT (30%).

4. Document Verification (DV)

Candidates who qualify through CBT 2 (and skill tests if applicable) are called for document verification.

  • Candidates must present their original educational certificates, caste certificates (if applicable), and other relevant documents.
  • This stage is mandatory for all shortlisted candidates.
  • Failure to provide proper documentation may result in disqualification.

5. Medical Examination

After document verification, candidates undergo a medical fitness test conducted by the Railway Administration. The medical test ensures that the candidate meets the required medical standards for the specific post they applied for.

  • Medical fitness categories:
    • A-2: For posts like Station Master and Traffic Assistant (requires good eyesight).
    • C-1: For clerical posts (minimal medical standards, adequate eyesight, hearing).

Candidates must pass this test to be considered for final selection.

6. Final Merit List

The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in CBT 2 and, in some cases, CBAT (for posts requiring aptitude tests).

  • Weightage:
    • CBT 1: Qualifying in nature (not counted in final merit).
    • CBT 2: Marks obtained are considered for the final merit.
    • CBAT: Marks are considered for specific posts (Station Master, Traffic Assistant).

The final appointment of candidates depends on their performance in the exams, verification of documents, and medical fitness.

Conclusion

The RRB NTPC selection process is a multi-stage process, with two computer-based tests (CBT 1 and CBT 2) forming the core evaluation stages. Depending on the post, candidates may also need to pass a typing skill test or a computer-based aptitude test. The final selection is based on performance in CBT 2, document verification, and medical fitness.
