Eligibility criteria for the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) exam

The eligibility criteria for the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) exam are set by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). To ensure that candidates meet the basic requirements for appearing in the exam, the eligibility criteria are classified into three main categories:

1.       Nationality

2.      Educational Qualification

3.      Age Limit

Let's break these down in detail:

1. Nationality Criteria:

  • Indian Citizenship: To appear for the KAS exam, candidates must be Indian citizens.
  • Domicile Requirement: While there is no mandatory domicile requirement to apply for the exam, preference is often given to candidates who have a sound knowledge of the Kannada language and the culture and geography of Karnataka, especially during the interview and selection process. Candidates might also be required to provide proof of residence or domicile if specified in certain recruitment notifications.

2. Educational Qualification:

The KAS exam requires candidates to have certain academic qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university or institution. The degree can be from any stream (Arts, Science, Commerce, etc.).
  • Final Year Students: Candidates who are in the final year of their degree programs are also eligible to apply for the KAS Preliminary exam. However, they must submit proof of passing their degree exam before the Main examination.
  • Equivalent Qualifications: Candidates holding qualifications equivalent to a bachelor's degree from recognized educational boards or universities (as prescribed by KPSC) are also eligible. However, such equivalence must be recognized by the government or concerned authorities.
  • Additional Criteria for Professional Courses: For certain specific roles (like those requiring professional qualifications), additional criteria may apply. For instance, for technical posts, candidates might need degrees in engineering, law, medicine, etc., depending on the job profile.

3. Age Limit:

The age criteria for the KAS exam differ based on the category of the candidate. The minimum and maximum age limits are specified as follows:

  • Minimum Age: 21 years for all categories.
  • Maximum Age: 35 years for general category candidates.

However, age relaxations apply for candidates from certain reserved categories as per government norms:

Age Relaxation:

  • OBC (Other Backward Classes): Upper age limit is relaxed by 3 years, making it 38 years.
  • SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes): Upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, making it 40 years.
  • Physically Disabled (PWD) Candidates: Additional relaxation of up to 10 years in the upper age limit.
  • Ex-Servicemen: The upper age limit is relaxed as per government rules, usually up to 45 years for ex-servicemen.
  • Widows and Divorced Women: Relaxation is provided, and such candidates can apply until the age of 40 years (for general category), with further relaxations for reserved categories.

It is important to note that the age calculation is generally based on the date of the KPSC notification release. Candidates must ensure they meet the age criteria on the specified date mentioned in the exam notification.

4. Other Eligibility Conditions:

In addition to the basic criteria of nationality, educational qualification, and age, there are a few other conditions:

  • Knowledge of Kannada: Although fluency in the Kannada language is not compulsory for applying, candidates are expected to possess a working knowledge of Kannada. In some cases, candidates might be required to pass a Kannada language exam or prove their knowledge of Kannada before their final selection.
  • Physical Fitness: For certain specific positions (like police or defense-related services), candidates may be required to meet certain physical fitness standards. These may include height, chest, and physical endurance requirements, and candidates may undergo a medical examination before final selection.
  • Character and Antecedents: Candidates must have a good moral character. Any involvement in criminal activities or misconduct could lead to disqualification during the verification stage.
  • Disqualification Conditions: Certain factors may disqualify a candidate from applying, such as:
    • If the candidate is already dismissed or removed from government service.
    • If the candidate has been declared mentally unfit by a medical board.
    • Any misrepresentation of facts or providing false information during the application process.
